Easy Lemongrass Tea Recipe
You’ll find lemongrass at your local Asian markets. If you are buying a large bunch, wash them with warm water and pop them in the freezer. It stays well (but it’s better to make this tea with the fresh stuff!).
I picked one stalk for this recipe and discarded the roots. There’s an outer skin on the stalks I usually remove and discard too.
After washing everything with warm water, I fold the stalk and use the leaves to tie a knot. That goes into a small pot with 3 cups of water.
The leaves have so much flavor – more flavor than the stalks. So it is important to get lemongrass with the leaves when making this recipe.
After a couple minutes of boiling, you’ll get that amazing lemony smell. It’s so good and spreads out into the whole kitchen. Fifteen minutes later, you are done.
I don’t usually add sweeteners to my tea. It tastes great as is; but you can add sugar, honey or any of your favorite sweeteners.
You can serve this tea hot or cold or use it as a great base for citrusy popsicles.

Why You Should Try This Lemongrass Tea Recipe
I found a couple studies that actually looked into the benefits of lemongrass tea.
This one from 2015 tested the tea’s effects on blood parameters like red and white blood cell count, hemoglobin concentrations, and cell volume. There were a hundred and five volunteers in this study and the test group were given tea once daily for a month.
The study found the tea significantly increased hemoglobin concentrations and red blood cell count. It also decreased the white blood cell count of the volunteers. So the tea may help with treating and preventing anemia.
Another 2015 study tested the tea’s antibacterial and antifungal effects. Microbes like E. coli, Staphylococcus aurus and Candida albicans were used here. The study showed the tea had good antimicrobial benefits.
Maybe that’s why it’s called fever grass tea. It fights microbes that can cause fever, infection, and more.
Lemongrass essential oil also has incredible antimicrobial benefits. But that’s a whole other conversation.

Lemongrass Tea Recipe
- 1 stalk lemongrass
- 3 cups boiling water
- piece of ginger optional
- honey optional
- Wash the lemongrass and peel its outermost skin.
- Fold the grass and add it to a small pot of boiling water.
- Boil for 15 minutes.
- Add your favorite sweetener (optional) and serve hot or chilled.
