Trini Style Aloo Choka (Caribbean Aloo Chokha)
Aloo choka is a classic potato side dish in Trinidad and Tobago. It is made with potatoes, onions, garlic, seasonings and sometimes cumin powder. It’s great for breakfast alongside sada roti and other chokas. Or serve as a side with dhal, rice, and a salad.

- 4 potatoes
- 1 onion (chopped)
- 2 garlic cloves (grated or minced)
- ¼ tsp cumin powder (optional)
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- freshly chopped chives, cilantro and culantro
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
Wash the potatoes. Cut in half.
Add to a pot of boiling water.
Cook until the potatoes are soft.
Drain.
Allow the potatoes to cool enough to handle.
Peel the skin and mash.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Sauté onions in coconut oil.
Add garlic and chopped pepper.
Mix the onions, garlic and pepper into the mashed potatoes.
Add cumin powder, fresh chives, cilantro and culantro.
Incorporate fully.
Serve hot with sada roti or dhal and rice.
Mix in a tablespoon of butter into the dish for a creamier choka.
You don’t need to cook the onion, garlic or pepper if you prefer their raw taste.
