Headaches are the worst! Especially after a long, grueling day at the office. Thankfully, there are so many home remedies you can try. I particularly like using essential oils for headaches.
Lavender, german chamomile and peppermint are my favorites. And there are clinical studies that prove the oils really do work!
Essential Oils for Headaches
Lavender oil has this wonderful floral smell that instantly relaxes me. I swear a drop of the oil near my pillow sends me floating into dreamland within a couple minutes. It’s so calming.
That calming, soothing effect is what makes lavender oil one of the best essential oils for headaches. Plus it has some pain-relieving and mood boosting benefits too!
Actually, this 2012 study found “Lavender essential oil has been used as an anxiolytic [anxiety reducing] drug, a mood stabilizer, a sedative, spasmolytic [prevents muscles spasms], antihypertensive, antimicrobial, analgesic [pain-relieving] agent as well as a wound healing accelerator.”
The study went on to test the effectiveness of inhaling the oil for 15 minutes as a treatment for headaches and migraines. Although the study was small, the researchers found 70% of the migraine sufferers responded entirely or partially to lavender. So inhaling the oil may be an effective and safe way of treating headaches and migraines.
From my own experience, lavender oil works for me. I either inhale the oil from the little bottle or add two drops to a tissue and inhale that. I don’t usually apply it directly to my skin, because it’s so sensitive. If you do want to dab a little onto your skin, mix it with a little coconut oil or jojoba oil to prevent any skin reactions.

Peppermint oil is another favorite of mine. It’s minty-fresh and leaves you with a cooling, tingling feeling.
A small study (from 1994) found a peppermint and ethanol spray applied to the face relaxed muscles and had a pain-relieving effect on participants’ headaches. But alcohol has a drying effect on your skin. So don’t go spritzing your face liberally with it.
Simply inhaling the oil works too! And, as a bonus, peppermint is wonderful for clearing up sinuses.
German Chamomile Oil
Chamomile has a relaxing and calming scent. Ooo and the tea is delightful! German chamomile oil (the blue one) is also one of the best essential oils for headaches.
This 2014 study found the oil mixed with sesame oil had anti-inflammatory properties that could ease the inflammation at the site of migraine pain. The study found the compound that makes the oil blue (chamazulene) had pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory benefits too. Such benefits have been confirmed by many other studies.
So use the oil in a massaging blend or inhale it to calm your headaches and migraines!
There are many, many causes of headaches. Using electronic devices for too long can tire your eyes and cause headaches. Dehydration or skipping meals are other causes. Or it could be more serious. So if these proven essential oils for headaches don’t give you fast relief; then talk to your doctor. This is really important if you suffer from chronic headache and migraine pain.
