You guys, we need to talk about the incredible benefits of avocado oil for skin. Avocado is a super fruit and its oil is a super moisturizer. It deserves some kind of luxurious oil award or something. It’s amazing.

Why am I singing its praises? Well, Diwali is coming up and I’m already in a full-scale house cleaning mode. And that means my sensitive hands are super dry and peeling. Bleach, detergents, dish soap and cleaners – they are all to blame! But avocado oil has been my savior. It’s been soothing my skin so much that my hands can stay in cleaning beast mode for a lot longer.

Just in case you were wondering – Diwali is an auspicious time when Hindus celebrate light over darkness; good over evil; and knowledge over ignorance. It’s customary to clean homes beforehand since worship is usually done at home. And you won’t exactly want to invite God into a dirty house. So, cleaning is a huge part of the custom.  

Anyways… back to the benefits of avocado oil for skin.

 

What makes avocado oil good for skin?     

The oil is made up of fatty acids like oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid. These are really good for your skin. Avocado oil also has vitamins like A, C, D, and E, minerals, and antioxidants like beta-sitosterol, beta-carotene and lecithin.

When mixed altogether, these compounds can do wonders for your skin.

 

Benefits of avocado oil for skin

It’s a super moisturizer

This benefit is what made me write this post in the first place… I should be cleaning; but this oil deserves some recognition! Also, an award!

Avocado oil has a really nice thick texture. That’s why it is absolutely perfect for moisturizing my dry, peeling skin. You can use it on your knees, elbows, heels and other dry spots. Use it on your sunburn too to soothe your skin and prevent peeling.

Oh and don’t forget about your hair. Avocado oil does wonders on dry, damaged hair. Use a little on your edges to minimize split ends. Or add a couple drops to your damp hair after you’ve shampooed to lock in that moisture.

It’s a healer

Avocado oil heals.

A couple studies actually prove it too. This Brazilian one mentioned the oleic acid content in avocado oil could be “an effective alternative treatment for wounds.”

This one from 2018 pointed to older research on rats that showed the oil helped heal and repair wounds. The older research also suggested these benefits of avocado oil for skin is related to the oil’s ability to increase collagen production and reduce inflammation.

That’s pretty neat for simple vegetable oil!

Avocado oil helps with psoriasis

Woah! Psoriasis too? Yep! Avocado oil is good for that too.

A clinical trial from 2001 compared the effects of calcipotriol (aka Dovonex) to a vitamin B-12 cream with avocado oil. Calcipotriol worked faster but stopped showing noticeable improvements after a month. The cream with avocado oil, however, was consistent in improving the psoriasis spots. After three months, the two treatments showed very similar results. So the cream with avocado oil is a great long-term psoriasis treatment.

In my Cosrx haul post, I talked about the rash spots  on my legs (I think it’s eczema). I used this oil on the spots before I tried the centella blemish cream. The oil really helped to reduce the itchiness and dryness. But there’s no denying that centella cream did some overnight magic.

The best benefits of avocado oil for skin!

Wrinkles… Stretch marks… Avocado oil can help with them too. Remember the oil increases collagen production when healing wounds? Well that exact benefit can help fight against wrinkles and stretch marks. Woohoo!

It’s unlikely to cause acne

The fatty acid combo in avocado oil makes it unlikely to cause acne even if you have acne-prone skin… But you should still patch test though just to be sure it won’t make you break out.

With its low chance of causing acne, avocado oil is the perfect oil cleanser and oil makeup remover. It has the right texture and thickness to get the job done. I love it!

It’s also a good base for a massage blend. I like adding a couple drops of lavender essential oil for a nice destress and relax massage. Sometimes, I’ll swap lavender for eucalyptus when my allergies act up. It helps me breathe much better and get a good night’s sleep.
